Berkeley College Professional Development Series Brings Real-World Leadership Perspectives To Students

Berkeley College students recently completed a six-part Professional Development Series of workshops held at Berkeley College. The Professional Development Series is designed to build students’ awareness and expertise in areas employers are looking for, such as interpersonal skills, leadership, agility, teamwork, critical thinking and humility. The Professional Development Series was created by Rovena Passero and Carol Fine, Esq., both Career Counselors, and Berkeley College Federal Work-Study student Shaiasia Boyd-Dorchy, all in Career Services, Berkeley College Woodbridge.

“In addition to learning important skills needed for success in the workplace, the students will receive certificates of completion, which adds to their value and their resumes when seeking employment,” Ms. Passero said.

Workshop speakers included Josh Reinitz, Esq., Lacullo Martino, LLC, in Nutley, NJ; Devarshi Upadhyaya, Founder, OnPoint International, LLC, a logistics solution company in Fords, NJ; Angelo Zecca, Professor, Justice Studies – Criminal Justice, Berkeley College School of Professional Studies, and retired police officer; Jason Gulya, Professor, English, Berkeley College School of Liberal Arts; Carlo Abad, Chief Municipal Court Judge, Jersey City, NJ; and John E. McCormac, Mayor of Woodbridge Township, NJ.

Student feedback for each workshop reflected its benefits. One student appreciated learning about how to de-escalate a conflict. Nearly half of the student comments described the value of hearing about the real-life issues and experiences directly from the speakers.

“We teach the students how each face-to-face encounter is a chance to broaden your network,” Ms. Fine said. “Face-to-face communication is very much a key to career success in this digital age.”
