In observance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, Berkeley College collected nearly 200 boxes of Band-Aids for “Courage for Cassidy.”
“Courage for Cassidy” is named after 6-year-old Cassidy of West Babylon, NY, who recently completed treatment for Stage IV renal cancer. After seeing the shortage of children’s Band-Aids in hospitals and remembering how they brightened her own hospital visits, Cassidy decided to start a collection, according to a story featured on ABC7 earlier this year.
“She overheard one of the nurses say they were short on kids’ Band-Aids,” said Jessica McCarthy, Cassidy’s mother, during the interview with ABC 7. “She said, ‘Let’s do this mom. Let’s donate some kids’ Band-Aids.’ ”
Through “Courage for Cassidy,” the Band-Aids will be donated to the Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital, where Cassidy received her treatment.
“The story touched me so deeply – especially Cassidy’s selflessness. At a time when she could have been focused on her own situation, she was thinking of other little kids,” said Amy Castillo, Assistant Dean, Student Development and Campus Life, Online, who spearheaded the collection at Berkeley College.
Ms. Castillo said she was happy – but not surprised – at how quickly the Berkeley College team supported the cause. The donations included brightly colored boxes of Band-Aids featuring everything from Mickey Mouse to Batman and Hello Kitty.
“We started receiving boxes from staff, faculty and students immediately,” she said. “Everyone went out of their way to get the cutest, funniest or silliest Band-Aids they could find. I hope this simple gesture brought a huge smile to Cassidy’s face.”
Ms. Castillo and a team from Berkeley College delivered the Band-Aids to Cassidy and her family earlier this month, along with a Berkeley College stuffed bear.
The Berkeley College collection was an initiative of Berkeley Cares, which throughout the year assists charities in the critical areas of food, shelter, health and student success.
